Passive Voice | An Introduction

Today's Summary


Tense is a grammatical term which tells us the [timing] and the [nature] of the verb. It is only associated with the verb not with the subject or with the object. Mainly, tenses are of three types :

  1. Present Tense
  2. Past Tense
  3. Future Tense
These main types tell us the timing of the verb. Each main tense is further classified into [FOUR sub-types]. These tell us the nature of the verb.
  • Indefinite/Simple Tenses
  • Continuous/Progressive Tenses
  • Perfect/Complete Tenses
  • Perfect-Continuous Tenses
But in Passive Voice, the following tenses are not in use :
  1. Present Perfect Continuous Tense
  2. Past Perfect Continuous Tense
  3. Future Perfect Continuous Tense
  4. Future Continuous Tenses

Passive Voice

Passive Voice is an Object-Oriented Sentence. It gives us the information about object. We should keep these facts in our mind while making any Passive Voice sentence.

  1. Presence of [Object] in a Passive Voice sentence is compulsory.
    Cricket is played here.

  2. Both [Object and Subject] too may be present in Passive Voice.
    Cricket is played here by them.

  3. [Personal Pronouns] are used as the Object.
    I, We, You, They, He, She, It

  4. [Indicative Pronouns] are used with 'by' as the Subject.
    by me, by us, by you, by him etc.

  5. [Object-Verb Agreement] rule is followed in Passive Voice.
    - A book was purchased by me.
    - Some books were purchased by me.

  6. The Main Verb is always used in its III form.
